NEW YORK STATE BOARD OF REGENTS SUPPORTS PROVIDING DEDICATED
FUNDING FOR FOSTER YOUTH ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES

The Fostering Youth Success Alliance (FYSA), the statewide coalition that successfully advocated for funding to support the pursuit of higher education for former foster care youth and youth in care, has endorsed the New York State Board of Regents commitment to implement regulations that would make the program a reality.

As a result of the action taken by the Board of Regents, dedicated funding will soon be available benefitting youth in care, and the program’s state-approved regulations will frame and guide its implementation.

“Education is the great equalizer, and we believe that providing a college education to youth in foster care and those who have aged out is one of the best things that we can do to provide them with the tools to succeed in life,” said Jessica Maxwell, Fostering Youth Success Alliance Coordinator. “Foster care youth face unique and significant barriers to college enrollment, retention and graduation, but with the support that this program provides, we can help ease the path by breaking down the barriers to obtaining a college degree.”

The Fostering Youth Success Alliance is appreciative of the Board’s action and continued commitment to providing youth in care with the support they need to apply, attend and graduate from college.
